Famous architects who have made significant contributions to Indian architecture

  1. B.V. Doshi

 As a Gujrati and Known for his sustainable and human-centric designs, Doshi was the first Indian to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2018 .

His noteworthy designs include

the Aranya Low Cost for Housing development in Indore which was awarded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture is one of his creations.

In 2018, he became the first Indian architect to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize

He was also awarded the Padma Shri, the Padma Bhushan, the padma Vibhushan, and the ‘’RIBA’  Royal Gold medal for 2022.

Having worked under Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn, he was a pioneer of modernist and brutalist architecture in India.

  1. Charles Correa

Charles Correa, a Roman Catholic of Goan descent was bron in Secunderabad. Referred to as the Father of Modern Architecture in India, Correa’s designs blended traditional Indian culture with modern principles .

His first significant project was the Mahatma Gandhi Sangrahalaya (Mahatma Gandhi Memorial) at Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad , followed by the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly in Bhopal. He designed his first high-rise building, the Sonmarg apartments in Mumbai. On the National Crafts Museum in New Delhi, he introduced “the rooms open to the sky”, his systematic use of courtyards. In the Jawahar Kala Kendra(Jawahar Arts Centre) in Jaipur (1986–1992), he makes a structural hommage to Jai Singh 2

His notable works include the Kanchanjunga Apartments in Mumbai

  1. Hafeez Contractor

Hafeez Contractor was born in Mumbai on 19 June 1950 into a Parsi family.

A renowned architect known for his bold and unique designs, Contractor has designed several skyscrapers in India, including the Hiranandani Gardens and Morya Regency in Mumbai .

He also designed  23 Marina in Dubai, which was briefly the world’s tallest all-residential building, and is currently third behind the nearby Princess Tower and 432 Park Avenue in New york City.

Contractor’s other projects include the domestic terminal at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport and the DY Patil Stadium , which serves as the home stadium for both the Mumbai Indians cricket team and Mumbai City FC team and Apollo Hospital, INDRAPRASTHA.

A celebrated architect and urban planner, Rewal’s designs often incorporate traditional Indian elements with modern principles . His notable works include the Hall of Nations in New Delhi and the Indian National Science Academy in New Delhi.

He received Gold Medal 1989 by the Indian Institute of Architects.

 A celebrated conservation architect, Lambah’s designs focus on preserving India’s cultural heritage . She has restored several of India’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the Ajanta Caves  Golconda Fort and Mahabodhi temple, and Mumbai’s Victorian buildings like the Crawford Market, Royal Opera House.

 A renowned architect and urban planner, known for his work on sustainable and eco-friendly designs, and his contributions to modern Indian architecture .

He was engaged by the UNCHS to develop plans for six cities in Sri Lanka

Benninger’s designs include the IIT Hyderabad, the IIM Kolkata, the Bajaj Institute of Technology, Suzlon One Earth Global Headquarters in Pune,  23 Metro Stations in Pune, and Tata institute of Fundamental Research.
